Google has added the Pixel 9 series to its Certified Refurbished programme, offering a cheaper way to buy its 2024 smartphones directly from the company.
US prices start at $499 for the Pixel 9, with the Pixel 9 Pro priced from $649 and the larger Pixel 9 Pro XL from $699. Eligible Pro purchases also include a six month Google AI Plus trial with 2TB of storage.
There is one immediate catch: the standard Pixel 9 was reported out of stock when the listings appeared, although selected Pro configurations were available.
Up to $400 below original launch prices
The refurbished Pixel 9 starts $300 below its original $799 retail price. The Pixel 9 Pro is $350 below its original $999 price, while the Pro XL offers the largest reduction at $400 below its $1,099 launch price.
These comparisons are against the original prices of new phones, rather than current offers from other retailers. All figures refer to the US Google Store.
The range gives shoppers three options depending on budget and preferred size. The Pixel 9 Pro has a 6.3 inch display, while the Pro XL provides a larger 6.8 inch screen. The Pixel 9 Pro Fold is not part of this addition to the programme.
What Google’s refurbishment includes
Google says its Certified Refurbished phones undergo multiple quality checks and receive repairs using genuine Google parts where needed.
Devices come with a one year warranty and are sold unlocked. Buyers should still check compatibility with their intended carrier, particularly if considering a purchase for use outside the US.
The warranty and official refurbishment process are meaningful parts of the offer. They give buyers clearer support arrangements than they might receive when purchasing a used phone privately.
Refurbished does not mean newly manufactured, however. The appeal is access to existing hardware at a lower price, backed by Google’s testing and warranty.
The AI bonus applies to selected Pro models
Google’s offer specifically names the refurbished Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL and Pixel 8 Pro as eligible for six months of Google AI Plus with 2TB of storage.
The promotion is for new subscribers, ends on April 4, 2027, and is voided if the phone is returned. The standard Pixel 9 is not listed among the qualifying devices.
Anyone considering the offer should check the subscription terms, including what happens when the trial ends. The temporary bonus is worth separating from the longer term value of the phone itself.
Pixel 8 models offer cheaper alternatives
Google has also adjusted its refurbished Pixel 8 lineup. The Pixel 8a starts at US$339, the Pixel 8 at US$389 and the Pixel 8 Pro at US$549.
That makes the Pixel 8a the lowest priced option among these listings. Meanwhile, the Pixel 8 Pro sits $100 below the refurbished Pixel 9 Pro, giving shoppers another price point to consider.
Availability may determine your choice
At launch, the Pixel 9 was listed in Obsidian, while the Pro models had Obsidian and Hazel options. Actual availability varied by configuration, with the base Pixel 9 reported unavailable.
Check the Google Store’s Certified Refurbished range for current stock, storage options and final pricing. The $499 starting price is attractive, but the model you can actually order matters just as much.
