TikTok’s New AI Advertising Tools: What Small Businesses Should Check

TikTok has announced more automation for advertising, shopping and lead generation. For small businesses, the practical task is deciding which tools are available in their account and whether they improve a measurable result.

The 5 October announcement was presented around Advertising Week New York. Australian businesses should check local eligibility before treating the full package as available here.

What is changing

TikTok describes Smart+ automation for Search Ads and a Creative Selection feature that brings advertisers’ assets, AI-generated material and creator content into an approval workflow.

The company also outlines shopping and lead-generation agents. Separately, it explicitly introduces TikTok Ad Network to US advertisers, extending campaigns beyond TikTok through other apps.

The announcement does not provide one universal price or confirm Australian access to every tool.

What should you do first

Our recommendation is to choose one business objective before choosing automation. That might be qualified enquiries, completed purchases or bookings. Decide how you will measure it and confirm that the relevant tracking works.

In Ads Manager, inspect the options available for your country, account and campaign objective. Check whether a feature requires a particular product catalogue, website integration or shop setup.

Keep the first test controlled

Set a budget you can afford to learn from, use a clear offer and review all creative before approving it. Check AI-generated wording for prices, product claims and delivery promises.

Assess enquiries for quality and purchases for value after costs. A cheaper click alone does not establish that a campaign is helping the business.

For Australian campaigns, use Australian dollars and accurate local shipping information in the customer-facing offer. Automation is easier to evaluate when the product information, destination page and measurement are already reliable.

Define a result that matters to the business

Suppose a service business wants enquiries. Count the enquiries it can actually serve, not every form submission. Record whether each lead is in the right location, needs the service offered and can be contacted.

For a shop, decide whether you are comparing sales revenue, gross profit or contribution after campaign costs. Those measures can produce different impressions of the same campaign. Agree on the measure before examining which version looks best.

Keep the landing page and offer consistent during an initial comparison where possible. If the price, creative and destination all change together, it becomes harder to understand what affected the result.

A simple example of why clicks are not enough

Imagine a campaign costs A$200 and produces 20 enquiries. That is A$10 per enquiry. If only four meet your requirements, the cost per qualified enquiry is A$50.

These are illustrative numbers, rather than a TikTok performance forecast. The example shows why an attractive result inside an advertising dashboard still needs to be connected to what happens in the business.

For product sales, include relevant costs such as discounts, fulfilment and creator fees when deciding whether more orders are worthwhile. An automation tool cannot choose your acceptable margin for you.

Review what the system is allowed to change

Before activating a feature, inspect the available controls for spending, placements and creative approval. Read the requirements attached to your account and objective, rather than assuming a demonstration describes your setup exactly.

Check generated material against the actual product page. Look closely at delivery promises, availability, prices and claims about what the product does. Keep records of the approved version so you can investigate a discrepancy later.

Increase spending only when you can explain the result you are seeing. A modest, well-measured test is more useful than a large campaign whose apparent success cannot be connected to customers or revenue.
