ChatGPT vs Gemini: Which Suits Your Small Business?

ChatGPT vs Gemini: Which Suits Your Small Business?

Choosing between ChatGPT and Gemini starts with the work you need to finish. For an Australian small business, that might mean answering a customer, checking a quote, planning a promotion or turning meeting notes into clear actions.

The useful question is how much checking and editing each tool leaves you with. A polished answer that changes your price or invents a delivery promise can create more work than it saves.

This guide provides identical business tasks and answer checks for comparing both tools. It is a practical testing framework, not a claim that one tool has won a controlled comparison.

Start With the Tools Your Business Already Uses

For businesses working mainly in Gmail, Docs and Sheets, Gemini’s integration with Google Workspace is a reason to try it first. Features depend on the subscription, so check what your existing plan includes before paying for another service.

ChatGPT is worth evaluating alongside it using the same briefs. Keep the first comparison simple: use fresh conversations, identical information and no connected accounts. This makes it easier to judge the answers themselves.

Record the date, subscription and model shown in each app. Comparing one tool’s paid reasoning mode with another’s free default would answer a different question.

Test One: Reply to a Customer Without Making Promises

Paste this fictional scenario into both tools:

“Write a customer email of no more than 120 words in Australian English. An order was due on Tuesday and has not arrived. Tracking shows a depot delay, with no confirmed delivery date. We will contact the courier today and update the customer tomorrow. Be warm and direct. Do not promise delivery, offer compensation or invent a refund policy.”

A useful answer should acknowledge the inconvenience, explain the next action and preserve the uncertainty.

Mark it down if it promises the parcel will arrive tomorrow or offers an unauthorised discount. Those additions may sound helpful, but they change the business’s commitment.

Compare how much editing each draft needs before you would send it.

Test Two: Check a Quote

Use a calculation with a known answer:

“Check this fictional quote. Three services cost A$550 each, excluding GST. Materials cost A$220, excluding GST. For this exercise, apply 10% GST to the entire subtotal. Show the subtotal, GST and final total. Do not add other charges.”

The correct subtotal is A$1,870. GST is A$187, bringing the final total to A$2,057.

Ask each tool to show its working. Accuracy matters more than an attractive table.

Test Three: Turn Notes Into Actions

Meeting summaries can become misleading when suggestions turn into commitments. Test that boundary directly:

“Extract agreed actions, owners and deadlines from these fictional notes. Alex will obtain a supplier quote by Friday. Priya suggested testing Saturday opening hours, but no decision was made. A website update was discussed without an owner or deadline. Keep proposals separate from agreed actions. Do not fill in missing details.”

Only Alex’s supplier quote is an agreed action with a named owner and deadline.

An answer assigning the website update to Priya has invented information. Treat that as a factual error, even if the resulting task list looks organised.

Test Four: Create a Useful Local Promotion

Give both tools the same constraints:

“Write an Instagram caption under 70 words for a fictional Perth homewares shop holding a Saturday clearance sale. Selected cushions are 20% off, in store only, from 10 am to 4 pm. Use Australian English. Include one clear call to action. Do not invent an address, discount code or claim that all products are reduced.”

Assess accuracy first, then tone. Would a customer understand the offer? Does it sound like your business? How much rewriting remains?

Choose by Accuracy, Editing Time and Privacy

Run each task more than once. Record factual mistakes, missed instructions and the minutes required to produce usable work.

Privacy also belongs in the decision. ChatGPT Business excludes workspace data from training by default. Google’s Workspace terms restrict training on customer data without permission or instruction. These protections do not mean every personal account has identical terms.

Choose the tool that consistently produces accurate work within your existing systems. A subscription earns its place when it saves time after checking, not merely when it generates text quickly.
